This is how I went about sourcing the soil for my garden and what amendments I added.
Calculate Amount Needed
I used the chart above to calculate how much soil I needed.
My figures were as follows:
– 116.75 square feet of bed space @12″ depth
– 5 cubic yards will cover 135 square feet
Source Soil
I followed the advice of a local Youtube gardener on what he recommended for soil.
If I were to search it out on my own, I’d Google search for a local business that specializes in selling organic soil.
Soil Type
The type of soil I got was a mixture of 2 different types of soil. They both contained organic compost and one also had added perlite.
Soil Amendments
Azomite
- 1 pound per 1 sq ft of bed space
Worm Castings
- 1-2 bags per cubic yard
Vermiculite
- 3 cubic feet to a cubic yard

Perlite
